News of 1999-2000Searching the The New York Times online archive, we will investigate the academic year 1999-2000, the time period in which Jennine Capó Crucet’s Make Your Home Among Strangers is set. Working in pairs or small groups, you will each have a topic to investigate and can post results on our google doc, such as images, links to articles, and quotations from the novel and their relationship to the time period in which they are set. After 25 minutes, each group will present their findings, making an argument about the role of your topic in the news in relation to the novel’s depiction of it (for instance, how the novel differs from the newspaper’s account). As you read, consider the newspaper articles’ tone and word choice as well as details that emerge that you were not expecting. This assignment allows us to learn strategies for beginning research with primary sources using digital resources like The New York Times archive. https://search-proquest-com.arktos.nyit.edu/publication/45545. Using Advanced Search, you can limit the timeframe that you are investigating. Research InfographicsWorking in small groups, make an infographic about the research methods in Issue 5: Research: More than Detective Work (Issue 6 in the second edition) of Understanding Rhetoric using Piktochart.com.
Each group will focus on 1/5 of the chapter. Divide up the tasks among your group members. Group members can work on the design, mine the text, and determine how best to present the information. With ten minutes left in the class session, email the finished product to the instructor who will display it for the class. Analyzing NYIT AdvertisementsWorking in small groups, select at least one NYIT advertisement here and discuss how it makes visual arguments and the significance of the arguments it makes. As you do so, pair your advertisement with a frame from Understanding Rhetoric. After 15-20 minutes you will introduce the class to the arguments that your advertisement makes and the connection you made to Understanding Rhetoric.
